Project Description

Alianza Shire is the first multi-stakeholder partnership for humanitarian action in Spain, with the objective of developing innovative solutions for improving refugees and displaced populations’ access to energy. It counts with the participation of the private sector – through, Iberdrola and Signify -, the public sector – through the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development – and the academic sector – through the Innovation and Technology for Development Centre from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (itdUPM). Between 2014 and 2017, Alianza Shire developed a pilot project in the refugee camp of Adi-Harush (Shire, Northern Ethiopia), where approximately 8.000 people lived. Thus, a comprehensive improvement was made to the electricity network to which the community services of the field were connected, and public lighting was installed over more than 4 km. In addition, refugees were trained and, with the support of the partners of the Alliance, implemented all the improvements to keep them working properly up to today. In order to carry out this project, all Partnership members mobilized not only material, financial and cost-price material resources, but also other resources such as knowledge, skills, human resources, capacities, and contacts.
