Project Description
In Sri Lanka, returnees and internally displaced populations are facing severe challenges related to the collection, supply and use of cooking fuel.SAFE in Sri Lanka aims to: 1. To address beneficiaries' lack of access to cooking fuel sources 2. To support displaced populations whom are without cooking supplies 3. To address protection issues (eg. women gathering firewood being exposed to gender-based violence) 4. To ensure that beneficiaries don't sell (some of) their rations to afford cooking fuel 5. To increase livelihood opportunities for vulnerable groups 6. To address environmental degradation caused by beneficiaries seeking cooking fuel resources The following activities are part of wFP's SAFE Sri Lanka initiative: 1. Distribution of fuel-efficient stoves among internally displaced people in the Menik Camp 2. Stove-making training projects to support the livelihoods of returnees in Northern Sri Lanka 3. Installation of institutional fuel-efficient stoves in WFP-assisted schools under the school meals programme 4. Creation of forestry home gardens for enhanced access to firewood and sources of nutrition, additional livelihood opportunities and environmental rehabilitation
