Project Description

Production of 2 million biomass briquettes to be distributed to 5,500 IDP households located in the 4 camps around Goma town. To implement a biomass briquettes production emergency project to meet energy needs in the 4 camps. This project also aims to reduce risk of violence for people living around the national park and IDPs in the camps, especially women, who are exposed to sexual violence. Extension and promotion of the use of briquettes as primary source of energy. Around 1,000 people from the host communities were trained on stoves and briquettes production, to be used on daily basis as an income-generating activity (IGA). Extension of the project into another North Kivu territory is needed as it is also close by the Virunga park. Also, an added benefit of the project is that it keeps the environment clean by using waste for the production of briquettes. The location of the project was in Bulengo Camp ID 100, Lac Vert Camp ID 101, Mugunga I (IDP) Camp ID 98, and Mugunga III (IDP) Camp ID 99 in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
